What is Polycarbonate Resin?

The denotation  of polycarbonate is “An artificial  resin in which the polymer units are connected through carbonate groups, including many molding materials and films.”

Polycarbonates are strong, stiff, hard, engineering thermoplastics that are known for being moldable, long-lasting, and lightweight. This makes polycarbonate one of the most broadly used engineering thermoplastics.

Polycarbonates (PC) are a group of thermoplastic polymers carrying carbonate. Polycarbonates do not have a unique resin recognition code.

Properties of Polycarbonate Resin

Polycarbonates are strong, rigid, hard, tough, transparent engineering thermoplastic.

Polycarbonate resin is malleable at room temperature and can be machined with traditional sawing, drilling, and milling tools. We can crook it readily at room temperature with localized heating.

Thermoforming is cheap and is also a popular method for forming polycarbonate. This resin is shapeless. Polycarbonate resin is steady at higher temperatures. It is useful for medical devices that must be steam-sterilized. It may also be fumigated with ethylene oxide and radiation through a limited number of cycles.

It has high impactful strength and inherent “water-clear” transparency, Dimensional stability It also has Flame resistance, Weatherability, and Formability.

Functions of Polycarbonate Resin 

It’s used to make windows, motorcycle face shields and windscreens, prescription lenses, and safety glasses.

  • Polycarbonate resin has obvious applications for transmission.
  • Many useful things are made from it! Automotive headlamps, security windows, motorcycle face shields and windscreens, prescription lenses, and safety glasses.
  • The polycarbonate is used in many buyer products as well to look and feel of glass without its brittle and weight blenders and food processors, drinkware, nursing bottles.
  • Polycarbonate resin is sometimes used in place of sheet metal in prototypes.

It is lightweight and superior shock absorption qualities provide a great advantage.

The History of Polycarbonate Resin 

The polycarbonate polymer was found almost by chance in 1928, when the researcher E. I. Carothers of the company Du Pont, manufacturer of yarn, began to work polyester resins and aliphatic polycarbonates. 

In 1959 factory-scale polycarbonate manufacturing started.1952 some scientists became interested in the polycarbonate molecule. They managed to copy it in the laboratory.

In 1959 industrial-scale polycarbonate manufacturing set up.

At the time society was not ready to accept the new, exceptionally strong, and transparent polymer. But the opinion of the American public did not delay in showing their acceptance.

Types of polycarbonate resins

There are few types of resin which are:

  1. Clear Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a vivid, strong, and rigid material: it is 250 times as powerful as standard.

  1. Abrasion-Resistant Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate resin offers scrape and abrasion.

  1. Mirrored Polycarbonate resin 

Mirrored polycarbonate mirror offers better strength, reliability,  and flame

  1. Bulletproof Polycarbonate resin 

Essentially it is a plastic that is particularly strong and long-lasting. When used in bullet-resistant systems, multiple layers of polycarbonate are coated together using polyurethane interlayer protective glazing materials.

  1. Colored polycarbonate resin 

The colored cellular polycarbonate resin is a perfect material to work in applications in natural or artificial light.

It is used in the field of medicine and replaces glass. 

Polycarbonate Resin Advantage 

The advantages of the Polycarbonate resin are:

  • It is used for 3D printing and it serves as a useful material for guarding automated machinery, offering easy shaping.
  • It is commonly used in various electrical and electronic devices, connectors, battery boxes, smartphones, and housings.
  • The substance has good electrical resistance.
  • This resin is primarily used for industrial functions. For example machine parts and electronic components. 

Polycarbonate Resin Disadvantage 

There are a few disadvantages to this resin. Some of those are:

  • Production Disadvantages

To produce polycarbonate, a high processing temperature is needed and this reason makes it more costly to manufacture.

  • Chemical Resistance 

According to Polymer Technology, polycarbonate has only little resistance to chemicals.

  • Vulnerable To Scratching

It is very vulnerable to scratching. For this reason, clear surfaces such as a polycarbonate lens in a pair of glasses will typically be coated.

  • Leakages 

In some studies, it has been found that BPA can leak fine amounts from polycarbonate containers and into foods and beverages. 

  • Harmful for Animals to some extent

In tests on lab animals, BPA appears to copy or disarrange the hormone estrogen and affect the generative system. 

  • Not good for food

Polycarbonates are contemplated to be hazardous when they come in contact with food due to the emit of Bisphenol during degradation due to material contact with water. 

Despite its cons, it is very useful in related fields.

Polycarbonate resin has become gripping biomaterials due to its excellent mechanical strength and good.
